A Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) soldier who was sent to the Kiyindi landing location to suppress illegal fishing is on the run after shooting and injuring a fisherman there.

The soldier is accused of shooting Micheal Takule, 40, on Tuesday in the afternoon because he thought Takule was harboring juvenile fish in his boat.

SP Hellen Butoto, a spokesperson for the Ssezibwa Regional Police, confirmed the incident and stated that they have launched a manhunt to arrest the suspect who is currently at large.

Butoto identified the suspect as 2Lt David Wabuche, a 32-year-old UPDF soldier serving as the Kiyindi Detarch’s commander and a member of the Fish Protection Unit.

Police added that a local resident had been taken into custody to assist with the investigation of a gunshot case that had been reported to Lugazi Police Station.

By the time this article went to print, the victim had already been taken by ambulance to Makonge Health Centre III.
