Rukungiri’s Katurika SS holds sports day, students urged to engage in co-curricular activities

Learners have been advised to become proactive by taking part in sporting activities to live healthier lives, improve on their physical fitness and have a source of income in future. 

The call was made by the Inspector of schools in charge of games and sports Rukungiri district Arinaitwe Solomoni while speaking as the chief guest during the sports day at Katurika SS in Buhunga Sub County.

Students from four houses including Giraffe, Super Eagles, Lions and Cranes competed in activities including athletics.

During the function, Arinaitwe disclosed that many Ugandans have ridden on their talent to become successful.

He urged parents to encourage their children to develop their talent by allowing them to participate in school co-curricular activities.

“Many people in the world today are successful and have been famous because of their talent. It is important for you to support the children, promote them as they may be on their way to success,” Arinaitwe said.

Mr. Sam Muhumuza Bisiku the school head teacher observed that sports day is an opportunity for the students to learn valuable life lessons that go beyond the classroom wall.

“Through sports, we learn discipline, team work and the importance of setting goals. We develop resilience in the face of challenges and understand the significance of fair play and respect for our opportunities,” he said.

He appreciated the team work between parents, teachers and students as this helps the school to go well in academics and outside the class.

The sports teacher for the winning house, Mrs. Jesca Ritah Mugarura, described how much work it required to see them win competitions, with students competing and showcasing their talents.

Ritah urged students to consistently engage in exercises that serve as a reminder of their strengths, as doing so could result in higher scores on national examinations.

Lions house won the competitions with 311 points walking away with a trophy and it was followed by Super Eagles that got 304 points, Cranes with 265 points and finally Giraffe with 195 points.

The best students in the different categories were also awarded during the function.
