Rukungiri district authorities have launched a campaign to increase Village Health Teams’ (VHTs’) ability to perform community service by providing them with medical health kits.

Under the direction of Hon. Mwesigwa Mathious Rwabugumi, the Rukungiri district secretary for health, and Hon. Winnie Nahurira, district woman councillor for Kebisoni town council and Sub County, the distribution process began on Thursday, where 80 VHTs received their kits.

Each kit will allow VHTs to offer first aid to patients at the village level and contains a pair of gum boots, torch, an apron, t-shirt, thermometer and bag.

Speaking during the handover to VHTs at Bikungu Health Centre (II) and Karuhembe Health Centre (III), respectively, Rwabugumi revealed that the majority of other districts had received these kits earlier, which prompted him to get in touch with the Ministry of Health and ask that Rukungiri district be taken into consideration.

Rwabugumi continued, stating that he received 1600 completely prepared kits from the ministry, which he claimed was a fantastic response and would help each VHT increase their ability to carry out community service.

Rwabugumi commended VHTs on behalf of the government for their efforts to improve community health and urged them to appropriately use the kits they have been provided for the intended purposes.

He continued by saying that the donated kits are an expression of the government’s gratitude and a proof that it is aware of them.

Nonetheless, in order to project a positive image of themselves as government health agents, Hon. Mathious Rwabugumi challenged VHTs to lead admirable lives in the areas they serve.

The main role of village health teams is to mobilise communities for better health services, hence bridging the gap between communities and health facilities.
