NEWS-Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), has threatened to revoke the contracts of construction companies if employees show up at the site without safety gear.
The severe warning was issued by RDC Bewayo yesterday while keeping an eye on the development of the Centenary Primary School in the Bikurungu town council and the Bugangari Health Center (IV) in Bugangari Sub County.
On November 10, 2023, work on a classroom block at Centenary Primary School in Bikurungu town council and the expansion of the maternity ward at Bugangari Health (IV) in Bugangari Sub County Rukungiri district were started.
The Joint Medical Stores (JMS) provided funding for the addition of the Ugx. 173M maternity wing in an effort to reduce infant mortality in the area, where Rwenkurijo Constructions Company Limited carried out the construction work.
Nevertheless, RDC Bewayo found that site workers were not wearing protective gears while on his monitoring visit.
He disclosed that construction sites are prone to many serious accidents especially for the site workers.
RDC Bewayo explained that ensuring safety on the site is everybody’s responsibility and it is important that both the contractors and laborers ensure their own safety although the contractor has a bigger responsibility.
He added that one of the effective ways to ensure safety at a site is to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) and these include helmets, gloves, footwear and masks among others.
“When on site, all workers, visitors, and managers should wear the required safety equipment,” RDC Bewayo said.

RDC Bewayo however threatens to terminate all contracts for Companies whose workers appear on construction sites without personal Protective equipments (PPEs).
