Rukungiri RDC, Chairperson LC5 urges people to embrace value-addition technologies of tree products

The Rukungiri district’s residents have been asked to support the new practices of adding value to the timber products as a means of boosting agricultural earnings, giving young people jobs, and steadily increasing the amount of trees in the area. 

The call was made by the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen while monitoring the installation of timber plant for Rukungiri tree growers and timber traders association in Western division Rukungiri municipality.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) donated the plant, and the new technology is intended to revolutionize the timber value chain and increase the association’s production.

Speaking with our reporter during the monitoring of the project that is worth over Ugx. 1 billion, RDC Bewayo who moved with the Rukungiri district chairperson LC5 Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama said the new technology will help in adding value to the timber products hence increase on the income of the people engaged in the business.

RDC Bewayo continued by urging people to adopt tree planting since it will support environmental preservation and the production of high-quality timber given the closer proximity of technology.

According to him, planting trees is beneficial for business as well as conservation, and it will draw more people to the group that promotes tree growing.

In order to ensure that the machine has raw materials at all times, RDC also advised association and district officials to organize more community members and encourage them to plant more trees.

RDC Bewayo expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government, led by President Museveni, for taking the effort to skill the youth and urged them to pursue it so they could make a life off of such projects.

According to Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama, the LC5 chairperson for Rukungiri district, the initiative would assist add value to timber in the district and throughout the Kigezi region at a time when people are in need of high-quality products.

Twinomujuni Arthur, the Rukungiri district forestry officer, said that the timber plant will help to eliminate illegal and unsustainable logging in Rukungiri district.

Twinomujuni also added that the new technology will help to organize the timber industry so that they can have a unified voice to negotiate on prices.

Some of the residents, including Tukashaba Nicholas and Asiimwe Albert, thanked President Museveni’s government for having such projects as these will help them as youth to eliminate from poverty through providing labor.
