Yesterday, at the Lweza Training and Conference Center, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda elected Reverend Venerable Michael Chorey as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Karamoja.
According to a statement made public by the Church of Uganda’s Provincial Secretary, Rev. Cabin William Ongeng, the Bishop-elect would be crowned and consecrated at St. Philip’s Cathedral in Moroto on August 25, 2024.
He will succeed Rt. Rev. Joseph Abura, who has served as the Province of Church of Uganda’s Dean and Bishop since May 27, 2007.
Rev. Ven. Chorey also served as the parish priest for parish of Christ Church in Amudat.
In addition to translating the Parliamentary ACT of 2010 that outlawed female genital mutilation, he has translated guides for Alternative Basic Education for Karamoja (ABEC) and numerous other materials meant to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, drugs, and neglected diseases.
On April 10, 1970, Rev. Ven. Chorey was born in Dingdinga hamlet, which is now part of Katabok Sub County in the Amudat District.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior on May 12, 1986 and was ordained as Deacon on July 13, 2003 while he priested on December 18, December 2005.
Chorey holds a Master of Arts in Theology and Development and a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University. He is currently in the completion stages of his Doctor of Philosophy in Theology and Development at the UCU.
