Following the business mogul Apollo Nyegamehe, better known as Aponye, being killed in a car accident last Thursday when the vehicle he was driving slammed into a stopped Fuso truck at Itojo along the Kabale-Mbarara route, police in western Uganda’s Ntungamno District have detained the driver.
Aponye, who was traveling to his native village to attend a burial ritual with three other people in the car, perished at the scene of the accident on Thursday evening.
His driver, Mr. Moses Buyinza, who was injured in the collision but managed to survive, was taken to the hospital for treatment and is now being held on suspicion of killing someone while driving recklessly.
Samson Kasasira the Rwizi region police spokesperson said that Mr. Buyinza, who had suffered a head injury, had been transported to Ntungamo Central Police Station after being originally admitted to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
On Sunday, the hospital released him. He got a cut on the head, which hurt a little bit but never really. It was thoroughly documented and revisited. The file will now be given to the state [attorney] for review, according to the police spokesperson.
The V8 Land Cruiser driven by Aponye with the registration number UBF 300Z drove into a stationary Fuso truck with the registration number UAZ 767D that was hauling Irish potatoes, according to Mr. Kasasira.
The truck driver is rumored to be evading capture.
At first, investigators believed that speeding was to blame for the collision.
Today (Wednesday), Aponye will be buried at his residence in Kigo village, Muhanga Town Council, Rukiiga District.
