The Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom has warned some politicians against involvement in early campaigns ahead of 2026 polls.
Ongom made this revelation yesterday Sunday during a friendly football match between Country Select and Nyakagyeme Sub County residents, which took place at Kasoroza’s Kinyamahwa Playground.
The chief guest during the function was Hon. Frank Rukanirwa Salongo of Bwambara Sub County.
Other guests were Hon. Fred Turyamuhweza, the former Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County and representatives of Hon. Jim Muhwezi, the current Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County among other aspiring candidates at different levels.
Speaking at the event, DRDC Ongom criticized politicians for engaging in early campaigns, saying that these practices keep candidates from serving their constituents and prevent people from carrying out development work in their homes.
Mr. Ongom disclosed that certain people have started holding football competitions as a means of mobilizing people and that these individuals have then started running unlawful campaigns against incumbent politicians yet they have not been nominated.

He continued by saying that these kinds of campaigns deny candidates a platform to express themselves and it keeps them from serving their particular constituencies.
“Do not listen to those diverting your attention to early campaigns but concentrate on the development activities for your homes and communities. As a district security committee, we will not allow all those politicians involved in early campaigns in this district because they are breaking the law,” Ongom said.
Rather than discouraging individuals from participating in development activities, Mr. Ongom recommended anybody planning to run for any elective office to adhere to the road map provided by the Electoral Commission.
Mr. Ongom said anyone who wants to conduct a football tournament should first acquire permission from district security because football tournaments have been known to swiftly turn into political rallies.
